Dharmashastra National Law University announces menstrual leaves for female students

NEW DELHI: Dharmashastra National Law University, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh has implemented menstrual leave policy for female students, as per a notice shared by Live Law on social media. DNLU took the decision to make “special arrangements” for women students and on the request of the Student Bar Association.

The policy applies to full-time female students. The law university’s student welfare dean, Praveen Tripathi, said in a statement that the full-time students can avail the make-up for the loss of classes due to menstrual cycle. The dean of student welfare will approve the leaves, it added.

“With the approval of competent authority, in furtherance of the university’s objective of making special arrangements for the women students and also based on the request of Student Bar Association academic year 2022-23, it is hereby notified that the full-time female students of the university can avail the general make-up for the loss of classes occasioned due to menstrual cycle,” said Tripathi in the official notice.

DNLU stated that the rules related to the general make-up on the extent of number of days will remain the same as notified and practiced in the university which define six classes per subject per semester.

Seeking support from the staff of DNLU on the decision, the dean further said, “It is also requested that all colleagues kindly consider the above ground when the student approaches for the signature on the general make-up form for the respective class.”

Earlier in January this year, Cochin University of Science and Technology in Kerala granted menstruation benefit s to female students in the form of 2 percent of condonation of attendance shortage in each semester.

Taking inspiration from CUSAT, the state government announced the decision to grant menstrual leaves to female students across all state universities in Kerala.
