DMIMS DU to become Datta Meghe Institute of Higher Education and Research; UGC clears name change

NEW DELHI: The Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences in Wardha, Maharashtra, is set to become Datta Meghe Institute of Higher Education and Research. The higher education regulator, University Grants Commission, has cleared the name change through a notification issued on September 27.
A deemed-to-be university, Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences (DMIMSU) includes the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Wardha, and Sharad Pawar Dental College, Wardha. A deemed-to-be university is an institution that has degree granting powers but was not set up through a separate central or state law. Even after the name change, it will not be allowed to use the word “university” in its name.
The DMIMS requested UGC’s approval to change the name to Datta Meghe lnstitute of Higher Education and Research in February, 2022 and submitted compliance reports in March and April.

The name change will come with a host of other procedural changes. A separate not-for-profit society, trust or company will be registered under the new name and all assets and corpus fund of the university will be transferred to it.
Apart from the medical and dental colleges, DMIMSU Nagpur also includes Ayurveda, physiotherapy, pharmacy, epidemiology colleges and research centres. It was granted deemed-to-be university status by the UGC in 2005. In the government’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for medical colleges, the Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences ranked at 24 in the country. In the NIRF ranking 2022 of dental colleges , it ranked at 11.
