Droupadi Murmu takes oath as 15th President of India: All you need to know

NEW DELHI: Droupadi Murmu takes oath as President of India, the highest constitutional post of the country, today, July 25, 2022. The oath taking ceremony is being held at the central hall of Parliament at 10.15 AM where Chief Justice of India NV Ramana will administer the oath of the office of the President to her.

The home ministry had earlier informed that the President–elect will take the oath of office followed by a 21 gun salute. The President will then deliver an address. Before the ceremony, the outgoing President and the President-elect will arrive in Parliament in a ceremonial procession.

Vice-President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Members of the Council of Ministers, Governors, Chief Ministers, heads of diplomatic missions, Members of Parliament and principal civil and military officers of the government will also attend the ceremony.

Who is the new President of India?

Droupadi Murmu won the Presidential election by an overwhelming margin against Yashwant Sinha after receiving over 64% valid votes of MPs and MLAs, comprising the electoral college, to succeed Ram Nath Kovind to become the country's 15th president.

Murmu bagged votes from a total of 2824 electors, including 540 MPs, while her rival Sinha got votes of 1,877 electors including 208 MPs in the election. There were a total of 4809 electors, including 776 MP with total vote value of 10,72,377, but votes of 53 electors including the maximum of 15 MPs were declared invalid in the election held on July 18.

She will be the first President to be born after independence and is the youngest to occupy the top post. She is also the second woman to become the President.

Droupadi Murmu swearing-in ceremony: Where to watch

The Presidential oath taking ceremony will be held at the central hall of Parliament at 10.15 AM. Chief Justice of India NV Ramana will administer the oath to her. On the conclusion of the ceremony in the central hall of the Parliament, the President will leave for Rashtrapati Bhavan where an inter-services guard of honour will be given to her in the forecourt and courtesies will be extended to the outgoing President.
