DU’s Sri Venkateswara College closed today after building collapse in Satya Niketan

Sri Venkateswara College, University of Delhi, will remain closed on Monday, September 7, 2026, following a building collapse incident in Satya Niketan, located opposite the college. According to a notice issued by the college on September 6, the decision has been taken in view of the incident and concerns among students staying in the Satya Niketan area.

The college said it is temporarily accommodating students, including both boys and girls, in its classrooms following the closure of paying guest (PG) accommodations in the area.

The notice stated that the college has taken the step amid “insecurity amongst students staying in Satya Niketan.” It further said that the campus would remain closed on September 7 due to the tragic building collapse.

The notice was issued by the principal of Sri Venkateswara College and circulated among the college administration, teaching and non-teaching staff, and students.

Satya Niketan building collapse

A boys’ PG building near Delhi University’s South Campus in Satya Niketan collapsed on September 6, leaving three people dead and several students trapped under the debris. Rescue operations are underway. Rahul Gandhi raised concerns over the shortage of adequate college hostels and unsafe PG conditions. Abhijeet Dipke and Krantikari Yuva Sangathan sought action over the incident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi and Delhi University expressed condolences and concern.
