NEW DELHI: The Union education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' announced on Wednesday that engineering course will be taught in the mother-tongue starting from next year, that the University Grants Commission has been directed to ensure the timely disbursal of scholarships and fellowships, and that the National Testing Agency has been asked to draw up a fresh syllabus for exams such as JEE Main 2021 and NEET 2021, based on board exam syllabi.

These major announcements were made after Pokhriyal held a review meeting to assess the performance of the education ministry's schemes and programmes.

Pokhriyal "directed UGC to ensure all scholarships, fellowships are disbursed in time and to start a helpline for the same. He also directed that all the grievances of the students be redressed immediately", said a statement issued by the education ministry. To offer technical education, especially engineering, in the mother-tongue from the next year, "a few Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are being shortlisted" said the same statement.

During the meeting, it was also decided that the National Testing Agency issue a fresh syllabus for the exams it conducts -- it will conduct both JEE Main 2021 for engineering and NEET 2021 for medicine -- "after assessment of the existing scenario in various boards".

Most state and central school education boards, including the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), have docked their board exam syllabi due to the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. “It was also decided that a campaign would be launched by the Education Ministry to seek views from students, parents and teachers on how and when to conduct the exams next year,” reads the release.
