NEW DELHI: The All India Students’ Association (AISA) activists and several students of Jawaharlal Nehru University, who joined the protest against the Sambhal killings, were brutally attacked and detained by the Delhi Police. According to official figures, four people have died because of the violence, which has left around two dozen others, including security personnel and administration officials, injured.

The JNU Students Federation of India (SFI) also joined the protest held at UP Bhavan. “Students from across Delhi joined in AISA's call for protest at UP Bhavan against the murder of five Muslim men by the UP Police in Sambhal,” the AISA said in a statement.

“The Delhi Police took it upon themselves to vehemently crush any outrage over UP Police's actions. Students marching to UP Bhavan from Udyog Bhavan metro station were brutally assaulted and detained by the Delhi Police. JNUSU President Dhananjay, along with AISA Delhi State Secretary Neha and dozens of others have been detained! They are not being told where they are being taken as of yet,” the statement said.

More than 12 students have been detained, as per reports. Following a court order, the mosque was first surveyed on November 19. On Sunday, the two groups clashed in front of the mosque while the survey was ongoing. They shouted slogans and pelted stones, and reportedly set vehicles on fire.

Condemning the Sambhal killings, the students group said: “Shame on Delhi Police! Release all protesters! Yogi Adityanath must be held accountable for murder of muslim youth in Sambhal!”
