‘Not acceptable’: IIM Indore, Tiruchirappalli defy quota policy, AIOBCSA shares ‘alarming’ details

NEW DELHI: Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have come under the scanner over not adhering to the reservation policy in faculty recruitment. Almost 100% of the reserved category positions remain vacant in IIM Indore and IIM Tiruchirappalli, the RTI data shared by the All India OBC Students Association (AIOBCSA) revealed. Sharing the RTI reply, the OBC students group asked the Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, “Why is the institution not filling reserved positions?”
Expressing concern over the “alarming” number of vacant posts in IIM Indore, the AIOBCSA said that the total sanctioned number for recruitment of professor, associate professor, and assistant professor is 150. Of this, a total of 106 faculty have been recruited from the general category, 2 from OBC, and 1 from EWS category were selected for assistant professor posts. However, the institute has not appointed anyone from SC, ST, or PwD categories.
The RTI reply further stated that there are a total of 41 faculty posts vacant for general, OBC, SC, ST, PwD categories.
In another post, the AIOBCSA shared the faculty data of IIM Tiruchirappalli and sought response from the ministry of education on why the reservation policy is being violated in premium institutes.

IIM Tiruchirappalli quota violation
As per the data, 83.33% of OBC, 86.66% of SC, and 100% of ST positions are vacant in IIM Tiruchirappalli. The institute has filled all positions under the general category but vacancies under other categories remain unfilled.

A RTI filed by the students’ collective, Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC) IIT Bombay, in 2022, revealed that 9 IIMs have violated the reservation policy in PhD admissions and 188 students belonging to SC, ST, OBC have been denied admission in the last 5 years. The students collective also dubbed IIMs as “Indian Institute of Upper Caste”.
