IIT Bombay hosts awareness workshop on National Credit Framework

NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) conducted an awareness workshop on National Credit Framework (NcrF) today, November 28, 2022. Minister of state for education, Annpurna Devi was the chief guest for the event.

The panel members for the workshop were- National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET), director, Gunjan Chowdhary, and executive member, Vinita Aggarwal; University Grants Commission (UGC), joint secretary, Avichal Kapur; National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) ,chairperson, Saroj Sharma; MDSE, senior economic advisor, Nilambuj Sharan; All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), member secretary, Rajive Kumar; PSS Central Institute of Vocational Education (PSSCIVE), joint director, Vinay Swarup Mehrotra and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) director and deputy secretary, Niti Shakar Sharma.

Speaking on the occasion, Annpurna Devi said: "NEP 2020 envisages universalization of credit framework for removing barriers between knowledge, skills and employability, establishing a credit accumulation and transfer system for all kinds of learning for ensuring seamless mobility between learning and skilling pathways."

She added that NCrF will provide educational institutions an opportunity to recognize applied aspects of knowledge and skills. The framework will also create new opportunities for lifelong learning and skilling. NCrF will boost per capita productivity, empower all and lay a strong foundation for India to lead this century, the minister further added.

UGC announced draft National Credit Framework (NCrF) awareness workshops being organised jointly by a high-level committee constituted by the government of India hosted by IITs. This workshop was organised to create awareness about the framework among shareholders to learn how the NCrF enables a learner to move between academic and vocational domains, exit, and re-enter programmes by accumulation and transferring credits.

Under the NCrF, school students will be able to earn credits from academic and non-academic activities, which will be stored in the Academic Bank of Credit (ABC), just like in higher education. According to a report brought out by the 11-member committee, a student can earn up to 40 credits for learning up to 1200 hours per year, for pre-school up to Class 5, the learning hours range from 800 to 1,000 hours.
