NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has decided to start a programme on healthcare informatics which will start from the next academic session, said Subhasis Chaudhuri, director, IIT Bombay in a social post.

“We are happy to announce that IITB in its last Senate meeting has decided to start a very new academic program on Healthcare Informatics from the forthcoming academic season”, he said.

The institute will offer the programme both as a minor and as an inter-departmental dual degree programme for BTech and dual degree students from the next academic session.

BTech, MTech

IIT Bombay will also subsequently explore the possibility of offering an MTech degree in healthcare informatics.

“We hope this new initiative will open up exciting opportunities for our graduates, including the possibility of doing startups in this niche domain,” he added.

Chaudhuri told The Times of India that the programme will cover topics like clinical data management, healthcare ethics and standards, modelling and data-efficient machine learning.

Expertise from domains like computer science, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, machine learning and medical science will contribute to the course completion.

“With the limited healthcare resources we currently have, we think this initiative has the opportunity to make a good social impact,” he said.
