IIT Delhi said that the framework is among the largest structured academic partnerships between premier technical institutions in India and is designed to leverage the collective strengths of IIT Delhi and the NIT system to advance education, research and innovation.
IIT Delhi-NIT collaboration: New opportunities
A key feature of the agreement is the creation of dedicated academic pathways for high-performing NIT students to pursue advanced studies at IIT Delhi.
Under the framework, eligible undergraduate students from participating NITs will be able to spend their final year at IIT Delhi as Special Exchange Students, where they can undertake advanced coursework, research projects and other academic activities under the supervision of IIT Delhi faculty members.
Postgraduate students will also have access to research immersion opportunities and academic engagement at the institute.
The collaboration further introduces an Early Admission Scheme through which academically outstanding students from partner NITs may be considered for admission to MTech, MS (Research) and PhD courses at IIT Delhi without the requirement of qualifying through GATE or other national-level entrance examinations.
As per IIT Delhi, admissions under the scheme will be subject to prescribed academic and research performance criteria.
IIT Delhi Collab: Credit transfer
The press release noted that the partnership includes provisions for credit transfer, credit sharing and advanced standing. This will allow eligible students to complete a portion of their academic requirements at IIT Delhi while earning credits that may be recognised by both institutions .
IIT Delhi stated that the model could help reduce the time required to complete advanced degrees without compromising academic standards.
Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Banerjee said the collaboration reflects a shift towards a more interconnected higher education ecosystem and embodies the spirit of NEP 2020. He said the partnership aims to expand educational and research opportunities for students and faculty members across India.
IIT Delhi ALIGN initiative
To support the collaboration, IIT Delhi has introduced ALIGN (Academic Linkages for Innovation and National Growth), a dedicated institutional programme aimed at strengthening engagement between IIT Delhi and partner institutions. The initiative comprises three key components:
-
Predoctoral Fellowship Scheme: This scheme will provide financial and academic support for UG and PG students aspiring to pursue doctoral studies at IIT Delhi.
-
Research Seed Grant Scheme: The grant will support joint research projects, faculty exchanges, student mobility and collaborative research proposals .
-
Research Immersion Visit Scheme: Faculty visits to partner institutions to identify research opportunities and strengthen academic linkages.

The institute said the first phase focuses on collaboration with 18 NITs, with plans to expand the network to additional higher education institutions in the future.
