IIT Delhi introduces BS in chemistry programme for JEE Advanced 2025 qualifiers

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has introduced a new undergraduate (UG) bachelor of science in chemistry programme for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced 2025 qualifiers. Candidates can apply for the BS in Chemistry programme through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling 2025.

According to the official IIT Delhi statement, the new BS in chemistry programme curriculum focuses on producing the next generation of chemical scientists and technology leaders for core chemistry-based industrial sectors and entrepreneurship. The curriculum is designed to lay a core foundation with a wide array of electives in chemical sciences, which is ideal for those seeking opportunities in both basic sciences and engineering or a combination of both.

Additionally, the programme is unique apart from similar courses in the country and is an extensive learning experience based on courses like the use of AI in chemistry.

“Students choosing the programme will be working with a world-class team of experienced and vibrant faculty addressing contemporary research problems relevant to society at large. The curriculum is designed in consultation with many stakeholders, including students pursuing chemistry UG in other academic Institutions, Industry leaders, academicians and government officials,” the official IIT Delhi statement said.

IIT Delhi: New BS chemistry programme

According to the official IIT Delhi statement, the comprehensive curriculum offers 30% hands-on learning, chemical sciences fundamentals integrated with basic engineering, courses equipped with AI-ML, laboratory access, academic responsibilities with cross-departmental electives, courses prepared for an advanced workforce, experienced faculty with research publications in top-tier journals and other advantages.

The other features of the four-year BS programme include basic courses in engineering, maths, physics, life sciences and humanities. The programme focuses on the laboratory component to support practical hands-on learning. Additionally, major and minor streams of bachelor’s and master’s degrees and flexibility in curriculum with elective courses, which allows interest-based learning.

S Nagendran the head of chemistry at IIT Delhi described the new programme and said: "The programme addresses the need to introduce multi-disciplinarity at an early level in chemical science education while simultaneously preserving the comprehensive and in-depth chemistry training expected from a pure sciences graduate. It has been seen over time that, on one hand, engineering graduates frequently lack the depth of fundamental scientific knowledge necessary to conduct research in the pure sciences, while, on the other hand, pure chemistry graduates sometimes overlook engineering fundamentals.”
