IIT Delhi to launch STEM mentorship programme for Class 11 girl students

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi will start a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) mentorship programme for girl students of Class 11 on December 30. The programme will include writing papers and internships.

In the beginning, 10 students have been shortlisted from different Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) in Delhi. These students will get an opportunity to interact with the faculty members of IIT Delhi and will have a dedicated mentor assigned to them.

According to a TOI report, senior officials of the institute said with time, the programme will be extended to more students studying across various schools.

Pritha Chandra, associate dean of academic outreach and new initiatives told TOI, “This programme is meant for high school girls only with an aim of having an extended interaction between these students and the faculty members. The schools have nominated each of the 10 students who have already decided their stream of study. They were given a bunch of topics that are offered here and accordingly faculty members were allotted as their mentors.”

The selected students will start with a winter internship for about a week or two before schools reopen. During the winter internship, students will be introduced to basic areas to work upon and after school reopening, they will have access to teaching modules, Chandra further told TOI.

While the programme will be conducted in online mode owing to the pandemic, students will be able to get hands-on experience in May or June, if the situation allows. They will also receive certificates on completing the mentorship programme.
