IIT Delhi organises Open House on Sunday after latest suicide

Download NowNEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi organised an open house meeting in the open-air theatre (OAT) IIT Delhi campus today, September 3. The open house meeting was conducted from 5 pm to 7 pm to hold discussions on the recent suicide events reported by the institute.

The meeting highlighted how the concept of "Academic Rigour" feeds on the fears of students from varied backgrounds, particularly those from the SC/ST community and professors take satisfaction in the fact that only 20 per cent of students in a class pass certain required courses.

According to the students, on-campus Student Counselling Services and Framework has failed. They lack the aptitude to comprehend concerns with mental health brought on by identity-based discrimination.
This comes after a BTech student of IIT Delhi allegedly died by suicide on September 1. The IIIT Delhi director Rangan Banerjee, in an official mail, informed about the demise of Anil Kumar who was pursuing a BTech in Mathematics.
According to the institute, it is the second incident of suicide in less than two months as Ayush Ashan was also found hanging in his hostel room. Both Anil and Ayush belonged to SC category and were students of maths department.
Following this, the institute decided to conduct an open house meeting led by the IIT Delhi director Rangan Banerjee.
