IIT Delhi ties-up with Danish company to open research centre on waste management

NEW DELHI, AUGUST 24: IIT Delhi is all set to open a research centre to study and find solutions for the waste management issues in the country. The centre is a product of an agreement signed between the institute and Denmark’s DESMI pump manufacturing company.

The objective of the centre, named ‘DESMI Centre of Excellence on Waste to Wealth’, is the removal of floating debris from drains like Babarpur, Barapullah and other water bodies in Delhi and generate resource from the mixed waste feedstock collected.

The pilot projects under the agreement will include management of floating solid wastes in water bodies. Removal of floating solid wastes for maintaining cleanliness and energy-efficient collection of waste from water bodies.

IIT Delhi and DESMI will also work together to create new mechanical tools to clean water bodies.

"This is a flagship initiative of IIT Delhi where the government of India, an academic institute, and industry are partners. This partnership is to solve the problems of waste management,” said Prof V. Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi.

The centre is set up with the support of Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor (PSA), Government of India.
