IIT Kanpur hosts BIS-Academia workshop; nearly 100 scholars, students, teachers participate

NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur hosted a day-long Bureau of India standards (BIS)-Academia workshop on standardization of mechanical testing and powder metallurgical processes and products on November 22, 2022. The event was attended by about 100 participants including faculty and staff members, research scholars and students.

The attendees were introduced to the BIS Care application that is used to check the authenticity of any BIS standard marked or hallmarked product. As one of its areas of expertise, BIS has taken up the initiative of reaching out to academia and conducting guest lectures to apprise the students, research scholars, staff and faculty colleagues about the ongoing standardization efforts and procedures.

Advanced centre of materials science (ACMS) head, workshop coordinator, Anish Upadhyaya, in his introductory remarks outlined the need for academic and industries to appreciate and understand the role of standard formulation for processes and products. In their talk with the attendees, BIS, secretaries of MTD sectional committee on powder metallurgy and mechanical testing G Ram Sai Kumar and Vishal Kumar Rana presented a detailed overview of the Indian standards in their committees. These lectures were followed by a visit to ACMS in post-lunch session and discussions.

The event was held under the aegis of ACMS and BIS. ACMS was established at IITK in 1978 with an aim to make major materials preparation and characterization facilities available under one-roof. This workshop was in line with the ACMS's efforts in sensitizing the materials community and providing detailed deliberations on standardization processes.

In his inaugural address, Metallurgical Division (MTD) head, Sanjiv Maini described the activities of the Bureau of Indian standards (BIS), and its journey as the National standards body since independence. He shared how the Bureau has been undertaking the work of formulation of standards on a range of materials (both in raw and finished form), products and processes, with specific reference to the various recent initiatives taken by BIS for standard formulation, certification, and online training on standards. He also emphasised the need of academia to participate in the Standardization activity.
