NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur will start its MBBS programme from 2024, an official confirmed. Its statement on the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 said IIT Kharagpur is “initiating a new dimension of its multidisciplinarity by starting the MBBS programme in medicine at the B C Roy Institute of Medical Science and Technology”.
However, IIT Kharagpur’s MBBS programme is likely to be somewhat different with more technology infused into the syllabus. “IIT has taken an initiative to introduce the MBBS course where students will be taught engineering and technology with a focus on medicine. While it is still in the designing phase, the institute is still awaiting the concurrence from the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare along with National Medical Commission,” the official told Careers360 .
The institute is planning to have 100 seats for the inaugural batch of MBBS students, he added.

MBBS syllabus, admission through NEET
“The institute has formed a committee for designing and implementation of the MBBS programme where we are trying to design a curriculum where students will not just get knowledge on medical sciences but also on basic sciences, engineering and technology,” the official explained. “As IIT Kharagpur has many opportunities in engineering and technology, we want students opting for the MBBS programme to all receive exposure in other streams available at the institute.”
Admission to the course will be through the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET UG), the national-level entrance examination for MBBS course.
“Considering the current times when there is a requirement for more medical education seats in the country, we at IIT Kharagpur want to contribute to the sector through a research driven programme,” said the official.
