Jamia Millia Islamia to start medical college, international campus in middle-east: JMI VC

NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia is going to start a new medical college and is planning an international campus in the middle-east, announced vice-chancellor professor Najma Akhtar during the centenary year convocation for the 2019-2020 batch today, July 23. The university awarded 406 golden PhD degrees and 400 gold medals to the students during the convocation. Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan and vice president Jagadeep Dhankar attended the event.

While addressing the event, VC said that the university has dentistry, physiotherapy, and other medical facilities but no proper medical college in its vicinity. Professor Akhtar said she has been asking for permission to start a medical college and, some time ago, kept the demand in front of the prime minister Narendra Modi and education minister. She said that she feels proud to announce that the government has given its nod for a medical college. Besides a medical college, JMI has a vision to start an international centre or campus in the middle-east.

Professor Akhtar went on to say that Jamia received A++ ranking by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2021. The university also retained its position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking 2023 for the university category for the second consecutive year.

Jamia has been doing good in international rankings, the VC added and informed that the university ranked 8th among the Indian universities in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University rankings 2023. She said that several professors have received prizes with professor Zahid Ashraf being conferred with the President’s award in science. Jamia is also implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, she said.

VC Najma Akhtar informed that there are 10 faculties, 44 research departments and is home to international students, primary schools, and various postgraduate programmes.
