Amid the ongoing agitation by JMI students, the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has finalised the completion of the students’ union constitution by May 15, 2027. Also, the JMI has asked protesting students to call off their hunger strike and protests.

All ongoing show-cause notices, disciplinary actions, rustication, suspensions, and campus ban orders tied to the protest period are to be revoked by the university, the JMI order said.

In a letter issued by the JMI registrar, the student elections will be held in accordance with the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines within six weeks of the start of the academic session, approximately within 6 weeks from July 16, 2027, or within 15 days of the constitution's final approval, according to related administrative statements.

JMI Campus Protest

The university has been witnessing protests for the last 18 days over students' demands to restore the Jamia Millia Islamia Students' Union (JMISU) and announce an election schedule. The agitation continued despite the university issuing an order stating that students' union elections would be held within 15 days of the approval of the union's constitution.

According to the teachers, the union was dissolved twenty years ago following recurring incidents of violence and attacks on teachers, including the then vice-chancellor.

Moreover, JMI administration has also alleged widespread campus vandalism, claiming gates and CCTV systems were damaged overnight during the agitation.

Online classes due to protest

Due to campus protest , JMI also extended online classes until November 24 and announced that practical and viva exams for the odd semester will be held online. The decision came after students refused to end their protest and demanded clear dates for students’ elections. However, as per latest order by JMI, campus-ban will be revoked by the administration.
