KEAM Result Cancelled: ‘No reason to interfere’, HC upholds single judge order on fresh rank list

A division bench of the Kerala High Court upheld a single-bench order quashing the Kerala Engineering Architecture Medical Examination (KEAM) result 2025, directing the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) Kerala to prepare a fresh KEAM rank list 2025, as per a Live Law report. The HC dismissed the state government’s appeal against the single judge order saying there’s ‘no reason to interfere’.

A division bench comprising Justices Anil K Narendran and Muralee Krishna S observed that the expert committee on standardisation of marks recommended implementing the new formula next year.

The Advocate General, appearing for the state government, submitted that the government sought to remedy the disparity to state candidates with the amendment to the prospectus, the formula for which was approved by the expert committee.

When the high court asked the AG about the expert panel’s recommendation, he said, “Every option was considered. All that is required is to see whether it was made in an arbitrary manner or affects the rights of any person. That is not being shown while applying the present formula.”

KEAM 2025 Results: 'New formula for next year'

When the counsel for one of the respondents argued that it is impossible to prepare the KEAM rank list within an hour (after the display of revised formula), the court said that it is, if some sort of software is used.

The petitioners’ counsel argued that there is nothing to show that the amendment in KEAM prospectus 2025 was to serve any public interest. “The government cannot suddenly change a formula which has been used for the last 14 years unless it can be shown that it has resulted in injustice,” they said.

The expert panel recommended revising the current 50:50 ratio of entrance exam and subject marks to 60:40 but never recommended the 5:3:2 ratio for physics, chemistry, and mathematics, the counsel asserted. The new formula can be used only after detailed testing, the committee had suggested.

KEAM result cancelled

On July 9, the single-judge bench led by Justice D K Singh cancelled the KEAM 2025 result observing that the last-minute changes in exam rules is ‘unjustified’ and ‘illegal’.

On July 1, 2025, the CEE notified the revised prospectus before declaring the results, as per which, the formula for counting the marks in PCM was changed to 5:3:2. The KEAM 2025 prospectus published on February 19 prescribed that the marks of physics, chemistry, and mathematics shall be in the ratio of 1:1:1.
