MCI formed a committee to monitor minimum standards of medical colleges

NEW DELHI: Medical Council of India (MCI) has constituted a committee of experts, to keep a check on whether the medical colleges are having the minimum necessary standard requirements for yearly medical admission process.

As per the reports, the main objective of the experts’ committee is to review the Minimum Standard Requirement Regulations and phase-wise requirements of the medical colleges for annual admission.

According to the MCI order, the committee comprises the experts, who are eminent medical faculty members, medical education professionals, and officers with having a vast experience in the administration of medical education.

Why has a Committee been constituted?
As per the report of Medical Dialogues , the government has decided to form this new committee to fix up the norms and regulations by considering the current situation. The committee will also monitor resources, requirements of hardware, and technological advancement to help current training and techniques required for preparing the medical aspirants.

The committee may also think of imbibing changes in the administrative structure. The constituted MCI committee will be required to do a comprehensive revision by examining the Minimum Standard Requirement Regulations for the medical colleges and might consider the incidental matter too.

Earlier, the Indian Medical Council Act was introduced in 1956 for the MCI, maintenance of Medical Registrar of India and other related matters. However, various aspects like the number of beds, qualification of faculty, size of lands, and others have been changed according to the time.

Expert members in the committee
As per the report of Daily Excelsior , the MCI committee comprises of various experienced medical prominent personalities. All of the medical committee members are mentioned below.

• Dr. Suresh Chandra Sharma, Chairman-designate, National Medical Commission is the chairperson of the committee,

• Dr. S Ramji, Ex-Dean, MAMC, and presently Senior Advisor, BoG, MCI, will act as Co-Chairperson.

• Atal Dulloo (Financial Commissioner, H&ME, J&K),

• Dr. Anna B Pulimood (Principal, Christian Medical College, Vellore, Tamil Nadu),

• Dr. Sharad Kumar Rao (Dean, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, Karnataka),

• Dr. L Fimate (Retired Director, Zoram Medical College, Aizwal, Mizoram and Professor of Forensic Medicine, Imphal, Manipur),

• Dr. Achal Gulati (Ex-Principal, BSA Medical College, New Delhi and Professor of ENT, MAMC, New Delhi),

• Prof Deelip G Mhaisekar, Vice-Chancellor, Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik, Maharashtra),

• Dr. Ranjeet Sinha (Associate Professor, Department of Community, Patna Medical College, Patna, Bihar),

• Dr. Rajneesh Dubey (Principal Secretary, Medical Education, UP Government), SS Shukla (Principal Secretary, MP Government) D

• Devesh Deval (Ex-Director, Medical Education, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare) are members of the committee.

• Dr. RK Vats, Secretary-General, Board of Governors, MCI will act as convener of the committee while Shikhar Ranjan, Law Officer, MCI shall assist the committee.
