New Delhi, Mar 20: Upon the recommendation of the Medical Council of India (MCI), the Central Government has permitted the addition of approximately 543 additional MD/MS seats in PG(Broad Specialty) courses across 61 Government medical colleges and PG institutions in the country. This is a one-time increase approved for the year 2018-19.
The approval of the Central Government for increase in MD/MS seats has been conveyed through a public notice published on Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) website in the form of a Letter of Permission (LOP). The list of colleges along with the increase in approved intake of respective MD/MS courses has also been released. The names of colleges along with increase in course-wise intake is represented in the table given here.
As per the notice, the approval for an increase in MD/MS seats is consequent to the revision in teacher-student ratio for clinical subjects which came as a result of MCI amendment to Postgraduate Medical Education Regulations, 2000.
The notice further adds that the permission of Central Government is subject to medical colleges ensuring minimum standard of medical education in terms of infrastructure, beds and faculty, etc. in their premises. If at the time of assessment it is found that a medical college is unable to provide minimum required facilities to the students, the permission of such medical institution will be liable to be withdrawn by the Central Government. In this regard, the notice reads, “It shall be ensured by the States & UTs or Medical Colleges/Institutes that adequate funds are provided in the budget regularly till all facilities are provided”.
As per the established norms, the admission on 50% of the newly added PG seats (except for Jammu & Kashmir) will be done under All India Quota (AIQ) by MCC, while the admission for remaining seats will be administered by respective state counselling authorities.
The notification gives PG aspirants who appeared for NEET PG 2018 a good reason to cheer given that it will enhance the chances of securing admission in the course and college of their preference. The registration process for AIQ counselling of NEET PG 2018 has already begun. Candidates who have qualified in NEET PG 2018 can register for MCC and state PG counselling for the academic year 2018-19.
