NIRF Ranking: Changes introduced in 2025

The NIRF 2025 rankings introduced a new set of parameters and methodology for assessing institutions on their performance towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Ministry of Education developed the framework under NIRF, with the detailed parameters and methodology made available on the official NIRF website. IIT Madras topped the inaugural SDG category in the 2025 rankings.

Another key change in NIRF 2025 was the introduction of a negative marking system based on the number of retracted publications. The system was applied to the Overall, Engineering, Universities and Research Institutions categories. NIRF also continued the elimination of institutional-level self-citations, a measure introduced in 2024 across all categories and subject domains, in the 2025 rankings.
