NIRF Ranking 2021: IISc Bengaluru retains top rank; JNU, BHU follow

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, has been ranked as the top university in the country by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking 2021 released by the education ministry today.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) also retained the second and third positions in the NIRF university ranking 2021. Calcutta University and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham make up the top five

NIRF ranking 2021, released today by education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, has 11 categories. These are overall, research institutions, university, engineering, management, pharmacy, colleges, medical, law, architecture and dental.

NIRF ranking 2021 list is based on the following parameters: teaching, learning and resources , research and professional practice , graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, peer perception.

In the NIRF university ranking 2021, the top three institutions have remained the same for the past three years. This year, Calcutta University has jumped to the fourth spot pushing Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham to fifth .

In last year’s NIRF Ranking 2020, IISC Bengaluru, JNU and BHU had occupied first, second and third respectively. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and Jadavpur University made up the top five. The last was the only state-run public institutions in the NIRF ranking 2020 university segment and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham the only private university, in the top five..

The announcement of the NIRF ranking 2021 list was late by over three months this year due to the general delays caused by COVID-19 pandemic. The NIRF ranking 2020 were announced in June last year.

The top universities according to NIRF Ranking 2021 are given below:

  2. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)
  3. Banaras Hindu University (BHU)
  4. Calcutta University
  5. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham
  6. Jamia Millia Islamia University
  7. Manipal Academy of Higher Education
  8. Jadavpur University
  9. University of Hyderabad
  10. Aligarh Muslim University
  11. Savitribai Phule Pune University
  12. University of Delhi
  13. Vellore Institute of Technology
  14. Bharathiar University
  15. Institute of Chemical Technology
  16. Anna University
  17. Birla Institute of Technology & Science -Pilani
  18. Homi Bhabha National Institute
  19. Mysore University
  20. Siksha `O` Anusandhan

This makes Calcutta University the highest ranking state university. In fact, two West Bengal state universities are in the top 10, the other being Jadavpur University. Although one of the most sought-after institutions for undergraduate studies with five colleges in the top 10 in the NIRF ranking of colleges, Delhi University does not feature in the top 10 among universities at. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and Manipal Academy of Higher Education are the two private universities in the top 10. In the overall category, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have dominated the NIRF rankings with IIT Madras being declared the best education institution overall.
