NEET UG Counselling 2026: NMC adds 13,636 MBBS seats for 2026-27; count crosses 1.40 lakh

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has updated the MBBS seat matrix for the academic year 2026-27, with 1,40,664 MBBS seats approved across medical colleges in India, excluding seats in Institutes of National Importance (INIs). The updated NMC MBBS seat matrix includes 13,636 increased seats across government and private medical colleges.

The updated MBBS seat matrix was notified by the NMC's Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB). It incorporates permissions granted for the establishment of new MBBS colleges and increases in the annual intake capacity of existing medical colleges by MARB, the NMC's first Appeal Committee and the second Appeal Committee of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
According to the state-wise NMC MBBS seat matrix , the total 1,40,664 MBBS seats comprise 64,121 government seats and 76,543 private seats. The matrix covers 839 medical colleges, including 447 government and 392 private colleges.

3,850 MBBS seats added in new colleges
The NMC said the updated matrix includes 3,850 MBBS seats from 41 newly established medical colleges. Of these, 13 are government medical colleges accounting for 850 seats, while 28 are private medical colleges accounting for 3,000 seats.
The MBBS seat matrix also includes increases in the intake capacity of existing colleges approved through the relevant regulatory and appeal processes. The NMC said the matrix may be revised further based on decisions of the Appeal Committee or other competent authorities.

Karnataka recorded the highest increase in total MBBS seats at 1,650, followed by Tamil Nadu with 1,250, Uttar Pradesh with 1,200, Rajasthan with 1,100 and Telangana with 1,060.
