#PostponeNEET Campaign: Politicians, former toppers come together

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court dismissed the students’ plea to postpone the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for medicine (NEET 2020) but the campaign for postponement has not stopped.

Over the past two days, several politicians, former NEET toppers as well as social media influencers and celebrities have weighed in. Many of them have been tagging their posts with hashtags such as #PostponeNEET.

Eleven candidates from 11 states had filed a public interest litigation (PIL) case in the Supreme Court on seeking postponement of NEET as well as the engineering entrance test, Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main. The Supreme Court dismissed their plea on August 17.

Following the SC decision, the National Testing Agency (NTA) first released the JEE Main admit card and on August 20, 2020, the National Testing Agency (NTA) issued a notice which stated that the exam will be conducted on September 13 and admit card of NEET will be released shortly.

Candidates were also allotted the exam centre city on August 20, which can be checked by accessing the candidate login portal on the official website of NEET (ntaneet.nic.in).

Several politicians have requested the Centre to reconsider its stand on holding the exam in September. Chirag Paswan, representing Bihar’s Jamui constituency in Parliament, has written to Union education minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ requesting postponement of the JEE Main for engineering and NEET 2020 exams.

Rajya Sabha MP, Subramanian Swamy, has written to the prime minister, Narendra Modi, and spoken to Pokhriyal about the issue. He has suggested holding the exams after Diwali.

Bihar’s leader of the Opposition, Tejashvi Yadav, has also supported the demand for postponement.

The demand for postponement found supporters even among NEET toppers from last year. Nalin Khandelwal, (NEET 2019, AIR 1) and Stuti Khandelwal (NEET 2019, AIR 71) also oppose exams in September.

Youtube celebrities with large followings, such as Bhuvan Bam and Ashish Chanchalani, are also urging the authorities to postpone NEET and JEE Main.
