Republic Day 2023: DU VC lauds govt’s step to provide free food grains to 81.35 crore people

NEW DELHI: The vice-chancellor of University of Delhi, Yogesh Singh, today lauded the decision of the Government of India to provide free food grains to 81.35 crore people and called it a “commendable step”. The DU VC was addressing the gathering after unfurling the national flag 'Tiranga' in the DU campus on the occasion of the 74th Republic Day 2023.

On the occasion, he also paid tribute to all the national heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country. Addressing the gathering, Singh said: “Article 47 of the Constitution of India provides that the government should give priority to works like raising the standard of living of the people, increasing the nutritional value of food and improving primary health. The prime factor for the provision of free food for the poor families by the Government of India is that no person in the country should sleep hungry.”

Appreciating the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make the country a developed nation by 2047, Yogesh Singh said that the academia will also have to play its role in this direction.

He said that a growth rate of 10% in the next 25 years to make India a developed country. And to achieve the same, the agriculture, industrial and service sectors have to work together, he added.

“Now agriculture needs to change with the changing technology. It should include Made in India technology instead of imported technology. Governments are working politically in these efforts, but the academic world will also have to play its role. Many such provisions have been made in the National Education Policy 2020,” the DU VC said.

A parade was also organized by the NCC cadets at the beginning of the programme. On this occasion, director of South Delhi campus Prakash Singh, dean of colleges Balaram Pani, Proctor Rajni Abbi and registrar Vikas Gupta, along with many officers, teachers, students and staff were present.
