Tamil Nadu schools closed; holiday announced on July 28 and August 3

Tamil Nadu schools, colleges and government offices in Tenkasi will remain closed on July 28, while Namakkal will observe a local holiday on August 3.
Tamil Nadu district administrations announced local holidays for major regional festivals. Therefore, students in parts of Tamil Nadu will get additional holidays in July and August. Schools, colleges and even government offices in Tenkasi district will remain closed on July 28, 2026, for the Aadi Thapasu festival at the Sankarankovil Sri Sankaranarayanaswamy Temple.
Namakkal district has announced local holiday on August 3, for the Valvil Orivizha celebration.
Schools closed on July 28
The Tenkasi district administration has declared July 28, as a local holiday for all state government offices and institutions, including schools and colleges. The holiday has been announced for the Aadi Thapasu festival at the Arulmigu Sankaranarayanaswamy Temple in Sankarankovil.
The Aadi Thapasu festival is one of Sankarankovil's biggest religious events and attracts lakhs of devotees every year. The festival reaches its peak with the Thapasu sighting rituals and grand chariot procession, drawing large crowds from different parts of the state. Considering the scale of the celebrations and public participation, the district administration has declared a local holiday. However, local report suggest that the government exams scheduled on July 28 have not been postponed.
Holiday on August 3
The Namakkal district administration has declared Monday, August 3, 2026, as a local holiday for schools, colleges and government offices to mark the Valvil Orivizha celebration.The annual event is organised by the government to honour King Ori, one of the seven Vallal kings of Kollimalai, who is remembered for his bravery and generosity.
