The initiative aims to make higher education more accessible and enhance flexibility in earning academic credits through the SWAYAM platform.
NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced a new framework aimed at making higher education more accessible and flexible by allowing universities to conduct examinations for Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM) courses. The initiative aims to make higher education more accessible and enhance flexibility in earning academic credits through the SWAYAM platform.
Previously, end-term proctored examinations for SWAYAM courses were administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL).
However, under the new framework, students who have completed SWAYAM courses will now have the option to take these exams at their own universities. This change is expected to significantly ease the process for students, allowing them to better integrate online learning with their regular academic schedules.
Provision for re-examination introduced
The framework also introduces provisions for re-examinations, providing students who did not pass or were unable to take their SWAYAM exams an opportunity to retake them in subsequent semesters. This increased flexibility is likely to enhance student success and engagement with online courses.
Universities that have already adopted the UGC Credit Framework for Online Learning Courses through SWAYAM can now offer their students the convenience of taking SWAYAM exams on campus. Students will be able to register through their universities, complete course activities, and take exams administered by their institution. The credits earned from these courses can then be seamlessly transferred to their academic transcripts.
"This new framework for conducting SWAYAM examinations at universities provides enhanced support for students and is expected to boost participation in online courses. We invite all HEIs to adopt SWAYAM courses and utilize this framework to make the examination process more learner-friendly, UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar said.
Implications for Institutions
To facilitate the adoption of this new framework, the UGC is providing two additional resources: the ‘Steps for Adopting SWAYAM MOOC Courses’ and the ‘University Dashboard User Guide.’ These documents are designed to assist universities in registering on the SWAYAM platform and integrating online courses into students’ academic records.
Universities are also required to appoint a Nodal Officer who will oversee the registration, examination, and credit transfer processes for SWAYAM courses. This will be done to ensure the smooth implementation of the new framework and maximising its benefits for students.
