NEW DELHI: “Is UGC NET answer key challenge a scam?” candidates have been questioning the abnormally high number of errors in the University Grants Commission - National Eligibility Test (UGC NET 2024) held in August and September. NET candidates are stressed as they are required to pay a non-refundable fee of Rs 200 to raise objections against the answer key. Moreover, students have also called it a “pointless exercise”.

A day after the NTA published UGC NET history answer key along with the answers for other rescheduled exams held on August 27-30 and September 2-5, candidates wrote to the testing agency demanding to upload the updated answer key as they could not afford to object over 60 questions.

Background wave

In this regard, Lok Sabha MP from Ponnani, Abdussamad Samadani wrote to the UGC chairman Jagadesh Kumar: “The fact that there are over 60 incorrect answers in the answer key for History paper (Shift I) of the UGC NET 2024 (rescheduled) test is quite worrying. This has caused much anxiety in the student community. Many applicants are unable to afford the high costs related with contesting the answers.”

“Releasing an updated answer key which is error free can solve the present crisis. This will restore the fairness and integrity of the examination and will do justice to the candidates. I, therefore, request you to do the needful in this regard at the earliest,” he added.

UGC NET answer key errors

As many as 11,21,225 candidates registered for the UGC-NET June 2024, however, it was cancelled due to paper leak allegations. The NTA conducted the NET re-exam as per the direction of the Union education ministry. As per the latest notification, the UGC NET answer key challenge window will be closed today, September 14.

Those who wrote UGC NET history exam 2024 alleged that there are over 60 errors and to raise objections against these errors will cost Rs 12,000. Students who appeared in Linguistics, Management and UGC NET English also expressed dissatisfaction and claimed that several questions have wrong answers.

A candidate who wrote the UGC NET Management exam wrote on X: “Is this answer key challenge a scam? The provisional answer to a basic value chain analysis question is wrong. To challenge this, I need to pay ₹200 per question, which is non-refundable. Exam.”

An aspirant who appeared in shift 1 for Linguistics exam on August 30 said: “About 10 questions I am uncertain about, and except for those, only 43 answers have been published correctly including both Paper 1 and paper 2. What is happening? Am I supposed to challenge around 100 questions?”

“We got a total of 13 questions in paper 2 of the UGC NET English exam that were simply chronology questions. Will NTA explain how this pointless exercise of cramming dates will test anyone’s ability to pursue research or teach? Posting them here so someone can enlighten us,” another wrote.

“UGC NET Answer Challenge Scam: A specimen from re NET August 2024. A simple Google search can tell you that Walcott won the Nobel Prize in 1992. But geniuses at NTA who made the question paper (as well as the answer key) will make each student pay 200 Rs each to correct it,” another X user said.

Calling out the ‘unfortunate state of UGC NET and centralised tests in India’, a social media user said: “...It is shocking that a National Eligibility Test, which is expected to have the highest standard of testing efficiency would have such errors. It's seeming like a cheap way to extort from young individuals seeking to establish a good life for themselves. Shameful.”
