UGC NET June 2024 application form window closes today; updates on new changes, schedule

NEW DELHI: The National Testing Agency (NTA) will close the University Grants Commission - National Eligibility Test (UGC NET 2024) registration window today. Students who are eligible for the exam will have to submit the UGC NET application form for the June 2024 session on the official website, ugcnet.nta.ac.in.

The UGC chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar announced a major rejig of UGC NET exam 2024. From this session on, the NTA NET exam 2024 will be held in pen and paper OMR mode on a single day. The test was held in computer-based test (CBT) mode for a duration of 3 hours.

The exam timings have not changed, but there will be no break between paper 1 and 2. Students should note that paper 1 and 2 will consist of objective type, multiple choice questions.

As per the exam pattern, the NET paper 1 will have 50 questions carrying 100 marks. This section will test candidates’ knowledge in teaching, research aptitude, reasoning ability, reading comprehension, divergent thinking, and general awareness.

Paper 2 will have 100 questions carrying 200 marks and will be based on the subject selected by the candidate and will assess domain knowledge.

Candidates applying for the exam will have to pay Rs 1,150 as application fee and those belonging to OBC-NCL and Gen-EWS will have to pay Rs 600. Whereas, SC, ST, PwD candidates are required to pay Rs 325 as registration fee.

UGC NET for 4-year UG students

The statutory body has decided to allow candidates who have completed a 4-year undergraduate programme to appear for the UGC NET exam. “Currently, an assistant professor can admit 4 PhD candidates and an associate professor can take 6 students and a professor can take 10 PhD students. So, we already have a large number of opportunities to admit PhD students. However, we will have to see whether the student has the aptitude for doing PhD,” Jagadesh Kumar said.

“PhD is not an undergraduate or masters programme and that’s the reason why we are saying that the student has to clear the UGC NET but they have to attend an interview at the university where their research aptitude, their readiness for doing research will be examined,” he added.
