UPES students secure international projects with Google Summer of Code 2020

NEW DELHI: Third-year students of the School of Computer Science, UPES, Harsh Joshi and Prakash, reached a milestone as they bagged individual international projects with the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2020 – an international annual program focused on introducing students to open source software development.

Mr. Ankit Khare, Assistant Professor (Senior Scale) and Placement Internship Coordinator at the UPES School of Computer Science, shared that the students of B.Tech. Open Source and Standards have bagged the project with Google in the past as well. He said, “Teachers can open the door but you must enter it yourself. I am proud of them that they have given their best. I congratulate them on their success. It gives me immense pleasure to bring to notice that this is the third time when our students have been selected in GSoC. Before Harsh and Prakash, Tushar Mishra in 2016 and Gaurav Agarwal in 2019 had also bagged projects with GSoC.”

Harsh Joshi’s project can develop a system for grading in online learning modules. This will enable peer grading in addition to the already existing detailed rubric manual one for student assignments. Harsh said, “It is exciting to be a part of GSoC 2020. This feat became possible with the support of my teachers including Mr. Pankaj, who introduced me to GSoC; Mr. Ankit, who kept pushing me and Mr. Monit for helping me on the project. I would also like to thank my senior Gaurav Agarwal for his guidance throughout.”

Prakash’s project, which is called ‘Implement Lengauer Tarjan Dominator Tree and Two Graphs Common Spanning Trees for pgRouting’ has been applied in many routing applications. Prakash said, “Words cannot express how thankful I am to have been chosen as an intern.”

The projects started this month and will tentatively go on till September 2020.

The Google Summer of Code is an international annual program in which Google introduces students to open source software development and awards stipends to students who successfully complete a free and open-source software-coding project. The students will receive a stipend of USD 3000 approximately.
