Paper 1 (General Studies) was held from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, while Paper 2 (CSAT) concluded in the afternoon session from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM, under strict security and verification measures. Candidates were required to carry their admit card, valid photo ID proof, and a black ballpoint pen for filling the OMR answer sheet and attendance list.
With both papers now over, aspirants are expected to closely track expert analysis, unofficial answer keys, and difficulty-level reviews as attention shifts towards cutoff trends and the next stage of the UPSC selection process.
UPSC CSE Prelims 2026: Paper analysis
The UPSC CSE Prelims 2026 General Studies Paper 1 emerged as difficult and historically unusual paper, blending conceptual understanding with highly factual questions. While History, especially Ancient History, appeared tougher than expected, Geography remained moderate, though the absence of direct physical geography questions surprised many. Polity had fewer questions but demanded precise, mains-style knowledge, while IR remained balanced with conceptual and current-linked themes.
As per experts, analysts and students this year UPSC prelims paper saw a major shift in pattern. Some of the key analysis as per experts and early student reactions are;
- Current affairs integration was significantly higher, with nearly 28–32 questions carrying direct or indirect contemporary relevance, showing a clear shift from static preparation.
- Science & Technology expanded sharply, covering AI, blockchain, drone swarms, quantum mission, green hydrogen, fintech and space.
- Economy questions tested applied understanding rather than textbook definitions.
- A striking change was the inclusion of ethics-based situational questions, blurring the Prelims-Mains divide.
Most of the papers were seen as tough and unconventional. Subject wise difficulty level as per experts and early reactions was;
- Ancient History: Tough and nuanced
- Geography: Moderate but unconventional
- Environment: Moderate to difficult
- Economics & Science: Strongly current-linked
- Polity: Fewer but highly specific
Rahul Puri, Polity & PSIR Faculty and Director, Anantam IAS, called it a “historically different paper”, saying it combined conceptual clarity with an unusually factual, PCS-style focus. He advised aspirants not to panic, noting that a historically low cutoff may be expected.
Overall, the paper was tough but clearly rewarded analytical thinking, precision and deep current affairs engagement over purely static learning.
