The Week In Education: Which states have cancelled 12th board exams?

NEW DELHI: Following the cancellation of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 12 exams after a review meeting held by prime minister Narendra Modi, over 10 states and Union Territories have followed suit and announced cancellation of Class 12 exams. Others are yet to make a decision.

The CBSE had said that students will be marked on a “well-defined objective criteria in a time-bound manner”. Most states that have announced cancellation of exams are yet to decide on the criteria for assessing students. So far, most have simply parroted the CBSE line of “well-defined” and “objective” criteria for marking Class 12 students in official announcements.

The Supreme Court has given CBSE and the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), which too has cancelled its Class 12 ISC exams, two weeks to devise an alternative assessment policy.

Here we have compiled a list of states that have announced the cancellation of state board exams and what state authorities have said about evaluation.

Goa board exam 2021

Following the central government decision to cancel CBSE exams, Goa cancelled Class 12 examinations prioritising the health and safety of the students. Chief minister Pramod Sawant said that students will be assessed based on “well-defined objective criteria”.

Gujarat GSEB board exam 2021

Gujarat cancelled the Class 12 board exams conducted by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Board, or GSEB, following the Centre's decision. The GSEB is yet to release the final assessment criteria for Class 12 students.

Haryana HBSE 12th exam

Haryana cancelled the Class 12 board examinations conducted by the Haryana Board of School Education (HBSE) following the cancellation of CBSE Class 12 board exams. Education minister Kanwar Pal said that the board will take steps to compile the HBSE 12th result 2021 and modalities for this will be worked out soon.

Himachal Pradesh board exam

Himachal Pradesh cancelled the Class 12 exams conducted by the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education. The government has decided that the HPBOSE will devise a formula to evaluate the students of Class 12 and declare the final results.

Karnataka 2nd PUC exam

Karnataka cancelled second-year pre-university (2nd PUC) exams, or Class 12 exams, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Education minister S Suresh Kumar said that grading will be based on the district level assessment for the first PUC exams. The minister also said that students unsatisfied with the assessment can write the 2nd PUC exams later. The Class 10 exams, however, will be held for two papers -- one for core subjects and another for languages in the third week of July, if feasible.

Madhya Pradesh MPBSE board exam

Madhya Pradesh cancelled the class 12 board exams, organised by the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE) for 2020-21. The board is yet to announce a decision on the assessment criteria for the Class 12 exams.

Maharashtra HSC board 2021

The Maharashtra State Board Of Secondary And Higher Secondary Education board examinations for Classes 10 and 12 were cancelled this year in view of the prevailing coronavirus pandemic. The Maharashtra Government has not, however, released the final criteria based on which HSC board Class 12 students will be graded.

Odisha CHSE board exam

Odisha has cancelled the Class 12 exams conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary (CHSE) Education Odisha in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. CHSE will announce the criteria for assessing Class 12 students soon.

Rajasthan RBSE 12th exam 2021

Rajasthan cancelled exams for Classes 10 and 12 conducted by the Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education (RBSE). Rajasthan school education minister Govind Singh Dotasra said that a decision regarding marking for the RBSE 12th result 2021 will be made soon.

Tamil Nadu Board Exam

Tamil Nadu has cancelled the Class 12th exam 2021 Tamil Nadu, chief minister MK Stalin announced. A committee, headed by the School Education Department Principal Secretary, would be set up to decide on giving marks to students.

Uttarakhand intermediate exam

Uttarakhand cancelled intermediate board examinations in view of the prevailing Covid situation in the state. A decision on the policy for promoting and grading students will also be taken soon, education minister Arvind Pandey said.

Uttar Pradesh board exam

Uttar Pradesh cancelled the Class 12 board examination with chief minister Yogi Adityanath saying the health of children is a priority amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The Uttar Pradesh Government has formed a committee under the chairmanship of additional chief secretary Aradhana Shukla to give recommendations on marking the students. Nearly 26 lakh candidates had registered for the class 12 board exams in the state.
