West Bengal signs pact with Education Ministry to join PM SHRI School inititative

PM SHRI Scheme 2026: Under the initiative, existing schools in West Bengal will be transformed into model institutions of excellence to serve "exemplary" schools, guiding, supporting other schools.
The Government of West Bengal has signed an agreement with the Union Ministry of Education (MoE) to officially join the PM SHRI (Prime Minister Schools for Rising India) Schools initiative. Under the framework of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2026, the West Bengal govt will transform selected schools into “model institutions of excellence."
The MoU was signed between the West Bengal government and the Union Ministry of Education today to join the PM SHRI School scheme . The MoE announced the development through its official X account.
Aligned with the vision of NEP 2026, the ministry of education, on its official X account, said: "This initiative focuses on transforming existing schools into model institutions of excellence. These schools will serve as exemplary schools, guiding and supporting other nearby schools to enhance learning outcomes, innovation and holistic education .”
PM SHRI Scheme in Kerala, Tamil Nadu soon
The agreement was signed in the presence of Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the Department of School Education & Literacy (DoSEL); Dheeraj Sahu, additional secretary, government of India; Binod Kumar, additional chief secretary, State of West Bengal.
Under this initiative, selected existing schools across West Bengal will be transformed into "model institutions." These PM SHRI schools are designed to demonstrate high-quality education, focusing on:
Earlier in May, 2026, the ministry of education had announced plans to invite West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala for the PM SHRI scheme.
The scheme provides funds to “model schools”, and has been part of the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan to promote universal access to quality school education.
