NEW DELHI: The Jawaharlal Nehru University students' union (JNUSU) demands the authorities to set up an immediate enquiry on vandalism on the campus walls. The university has seen similar acts prior to the incident and condemn such actions in a recent statement.
On December 1, 2022, the walls of JNU school of international studies were vandalised with slogans against the Brahmin and Baniya communities. Phrases such as Brahmins Leave The Campus", "There Will Be Blood", "Brahmin Bharat Chhodo" and "Brahmino-Baniyas, we are coming for you! Following the incident, JNUSU states "Such statements are clearly meant to disturb the normalcy of the campus by vitiating the campus environment. This is not the first time that such vandalism has occurred within the university. Several instances have happened during previous years."
According to the student body, anti-Muslim slogans were written across the walls of the JNU campus. The university welcomes political art and wall postering as it is a part of the political culture and university, however the union denounces the recent events on the campus . JNUSU alleges these actions on a "certain group" within the campus that has allegedly attempted to "vitiate" the campus environment, either through "such condemnable stunts or through outright violence."
"The JNUSU reiterates it's strong condemnation of the present and past acts of vandalism and urges the JNU Administration to conduct a time bound free and fair enquiry to ensure peace and normalcy on the campus." read the JNUSU statement.
