ARIIA Ranking 2021: Only one IIM; IIT Madras, Bombay lead among tech schools
IIM Kozhikode is the only IIM to be featured in the ARIIA rankings for innovation this year

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Kozhikode, is the only IIM to be featured in the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) 2021. It has been ranked among the “non-technical” centrally-funded institutions. The list of technical institutes is dominated almost entirely by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) with IIT Madras and IIT Bombay in the lead. The ministry of education announced the ARIIA ranking 2021 today.
“IIMK acquired fourth rank in NIRF [ National Institutional Ranking Framework ] and second rank in ARIIA this year. This makes the silver jubilee of the institute special. IIMK provides motivation and guidance to students to develop their entrepreneurial spirit,” said Debashis Chatterjee, director of IIM Kozhikode.

IIM Kozhikode had developed a business incubator and entrepreneurship development centre - IIMK LIVE back in 2016. Only two institutions were ranked in this category and IIM-K came in behind the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).
Apart from IIM Kozhikode, the administration of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and IIT Bombay also reacted to the ARIIA rankings 2021.
IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee
IIT Bombay has been standing second in the ARIIA rankings for several years. It came in second in the 2019 and 2020 rankings as well, in the “publicly-funded institutions” category. In 2021, ARIIA has also separated technical from non-technical institutions.
“Innovation plays a major role in today's higher education. IIT Bombay puts a lot of emphasis on creating an ambience that is conducive to innovation and entrepreneurship. We are happy to note this recognition, but there is scope for further improving the ecosystem,” said Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director, IIT Bombay.

IIT Madras has been in the top position for three years in a row. The director, Bhaskar Ramamurthi, said: “We are delighted to be adjudged the Most Innovative Institute for the third time in a row since inception of the Atal Rankings on Innovation. IIT Madras places a lot of emphasis on innovations among its students and faculty, which has resulted in a very successful and fast-growing deep technology startup ecosystem in the country.”

IIT Roorkee has been ranked at fifth position in the ARIIA rankings. It has improved four places from its previous year's rank.
"This improvement proves IIT Roorkee's efforts towards making the institute innovation savvy. 18 startups were established, patents increased by 50% and four technologies were commercialized during the evaluation period", said Rajat Agrawal, associate dean of innovation and incubation, IIT Roorkee.

ARIIA Rankings 2021 was virtually released by Subhas Sarkar, minister of state, ministry of education. The event was streamed online. It ranks higher educational institutions and universities for their work in promoting innovation and entrepreneurship development.
