NEW DELHI: Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar widely known as Babasaheb Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891, in Madhya Pradesh’s Mhow district. A flag-bearer of India’s Dalit activism, Babasaheb Ambedkar was also the first union minister of the law of Independent India. While fighting for justice for the downtrodden, he helmed the task of drafting the Constitution of India.
Long past his death, his ideas summed up in the slogan ‘Educate, agitate, organize!’ continue to echo through the walls of various universities and educational institutes of India. For his exceptional contribution to the emancipation of the Dalit community, he was also conferred India's highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna, posthumously in the year 1990.
Babasaheb Ambedkar’s teachings, his affection for books, radical thoughts, and ideas are celebrated in Dalit history month every year in April. The month is also meant for remembrance of important events and people that left a mark on the history of historically-marginalized communities.
