CU allows course change with seven year completion window, introduces four year gap limit for UG admissions from 2025–26 and 2026–27 sessions
University of Calcutta has announced changes to its re-admission rules for undergraduate courses under the Curriculum and Credit Framework (CCF) 2022, giving students more clarity and flexibility around course duration and enrolment.
The revised rules were approved by the vice-chancellor on March 30, 2026, under the provisions of the Calcutta University Act, 1979. They apply to a range of UG programmes such as BA, BSc, BCom, BBA, BFA and others covered under earlier admission regulations issued in 2023.
As per the notification, the new rules will be implemented from the 2025–26 academic session and will apply to students seeking fresh admission or re-admission.
CU allows fresh admission with course change
Under the updated rules, Calcutta University has made it easier for students to switch courses. Those who were previously registered can now take fresh admission online in a different course or subject combination.
In such cases, their earlier enrolment will be cancelled, and they will get a fresh seven-year window from the year of new admission to complete their course. This is likely to benefit students who want to change their academic direction or start over.
CU sets rules for re-admission in same course
For students who wish to return to the same course and subject combination, Calcutta University has laid down separate conditions depending on whether they appeared for exams earlier.
Students who did not appear in any end-semester exam can take re-admission after cancelling their previous enrolment. They will then get a new seven-year period from the latest admission year to complete their degree.
CU keeps original enrolment for some students
On the other hand, students who have already appeared for at least one semester exam will not have their earlier registration cancelled. Their original enrollment will remain valid.

These students will need to complete their course within seven years from their first admission. The university has also clarified that re-admission in such cases will only be allowed if the remaining time is enough to finish the programme.
CU to implement new rules from 2025–26
The University has made it clear that all students must still meet the eligibility criteria laid out in the admission rules of their respective courses.
The updated re-admission guidelines will come into effect from the 2025–26 academic session, and are expected to make the process more student-friendly while maintaining academic requirements.
CU sets four year limit for UG admissions
CU has introduced a new eligibility rule for admission to undergraduate courses such as BA, BSc, BCom and BMus under CCF 2022. As per the notification, students will not be allowed to apply if more than four years have passed since they completed their previous qualifying examination. The rule will come into effect from the 2026–27 academic session onward.
