CBSE to introduce two levels for class 10 Maths exam from 2020 onwards

NEW DELHI, JANUARY 11, 2019 : Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to introduce two levels of Mathematics examination for class 10th students. This will be effective for the academic session 2019-20 onwards.

As per the National Curriculum Framework (NCF), students experience the greatest stress before and during their most difficult exam. So keeping this in mind, CBSE decided to hold two level examination for mathematics for secondary school students as it will allow to test for different levels and reduce overall student stress level.

• Class X two level examination will be held for Mathematics subject from the academic session ending in March 2020 onwards.

• This two-level scheme will not apply to the internal assessment of class 10th. In case of 9th class, there will be no change either in examination or in assessment.

• The first level of the exam would be the same as the existing level and it is named as Mathematics-Standard

• The second level of the exam would be the Mathematics-Basic for the easier level of examination

• Mathematics- standard would be for the candidates who want to continue Mathematics at higher levels.

• Basic Mathematics would be for the candidates who do not wish to opt for Mathematics at Sr. secondary levels.

• The syllabus, classroom teaching and internal assessment for both the levels of examination would remain the same. Students get an opportunity to study all the topics and decide on the level they want to appear.

• Students would be able to choose for the level at the time of submission of List of Candidates (LoC) to the Board online.

• If any student fails at any level of Mathematics, he/she will have the following compartment examination options

• If a student qualifies the Mathematic-Basic exam and wants to appear for Mathematics-standard for compartment exam to pursue Mathematics at higher levels then he/she can do so as per norms of the board.

Designs for both level question papers for the academic session ending March 2020 onwards will be made available on the official website in due course time. Detailed guidelines regarding the filling up of List of Candidates (LOC) for the examination in 2020 will be issued very soon by the board.
