CLAT 2027: No changes in syllabus, exam pattern for UG and PG papers, says Consortium

The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) and the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) have announced that there will be no changes to the syllabus or examination pattern or sections for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2027. The decision was taken at the annual meeting of the governing body of the consortium held on July 18, 2026.

According to a press release, the Governing Body resolved to retain the existing syllabus and sections for both the undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) CLAT 2027 examinations. However, the CLAT 2027 convenor and paper setters will consider and adopt the recommendations of the CLAT Expert Committee Report 2026 related to question format and quality wherever feasible.

The Consortium said, "The Governing Body resolved that there will be no changes to the syllabus and pattern/sections of the UG and PG papers in CLAT 2027.”

It added that "the Convenor CLAT 2027 and all paper setters will consider and adopt the suggestions of the CLAT Expert Committee Report regarding question format and quality in a feasible manner."

The Consortium also decided to publish the CLAT Expert Committee Report 2026 on its official website to invite feedback from experts, students and the general public.

As per the press release, experts, students and the wider public can submit their comments and suggestions through the online feedback form by August 31, 2026. The feedback received will be considered during discussions on future reforms to the examination.

The expert committee had been appointed to examine various aspects of the CLAT exam, including "question quality", paper structure, syllabus and comparable entrance exams such as the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and the Law National Aptitude Test (LNAT).

The Consortium said, "The report shall be published on the website of the Consortium to invite feedback and suggestions from experts, students and the wider public."

Recommendations to be considered for CLAT 2028

The Consortium said the Expert Committee's recommendations and public feedback will be examined before introducing any major changes to the examination.

It was noted that during a meeting held on May 17, 2026, at the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal, under the chairmanship of the President of the Consortium of NLUs, it was resolved that the Office of the Hon'ble Chief Justice of India would constitute a committee to further examine the recommendations made in the Expert Committee Report.

The Consortium said, "The Governing Body of the Consortium of NLUs shall, in coordination with the committee, engage with the recommendations of the report and public feedback in preparation for CLAT 2028."

CLAT UG exam pattern

As there are no changes to the CLAT 2027 syllabus and exam pattern, the undergraduate law entrance exam will continue to be conducted in the existing format. The UG CLAT exam will be a two-hour computer-based test comprising 120 multiple-choice questions (MCQs). Each question will carry one mark, while 0.25 marks will be deducted for every incorrect answer.

The question paper will include questions from the following five sections:

• English language
• Current affairs, including general knowledge
• Legal reasoning
• Logical reasoning
• Quantitative techniques
