NEW DELHI: Following a marked improvement in the COVID-19 situation, several states including Delhi, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Telangana reopened colleges from September 1.
Click Here | College Reopening Live Updates: Universities begin admission as colleges reopen in country
Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia on Friday announced that schools, colleges, universities will be permitted to reopen from September 1. However, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi University (DU) and Jamia Millia Islamia said that they will hold meetings internally to discuss the resumption of offline classes.
According to a Delhi University official, a meeting of senior officials was held on Wednesday and the colleges might open from next week, PTI reported.
The DU registrar Vikas Gupta earlier said the university won't be able to resume from September 1. While Jamia Millia Islamia said the educational institute will wait for UGC guidelines in the matter before taking any decision.
Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra governments are yet to take a final call on resuming college. However, students flood Twitter with memes and requests using different hashtags for an update on college reopening.
As experts advise authorities and parents to tread with caution, amid fear of a possible third wave of Covid-19, state governments have also instructed colleges, schools and universities to strictly follow SOPs for resuming physical classes.
Punjab, Chandigarh and Odisha have already reopened colleges for those students who have received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.
Students have been requesting state governments to reopen colleges on all social media platforms. They have also been expressing concern over the education loss caused by the pandemic-induced disruption. Colleges were shut last year in March to contain the spread of coronavirus in the country. Though colleges and universities started reopening early this year, the second wave of COVID-19 further delayed the resumption of offline classes.
