NEW DELHI: The Postgraduate Students’ Union of Assam has urged the state government to exempt the students staying in private hostels and paying-guest facilities from paying rent during the lockdown period.
In a letter addressed to the chief minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, the members of various student groups have requested a payment relaxation for those students who are facing a “financial crisis”.
The letter says: “It is seen that many students studying in various colleges and universities in our state [Assam] reside in these private hostels and paying guests. Hence it would be a great help if those students facing financial trouble through these harsh times can be helped.”
The letter further asks the government to provide financial assistance for those without a “fixed source of income”.
“Majority of the students in our state come from outside. There are around 10 lakh students here and almost 70 percent these students reside in paying guest fasciitis or private hostels,” said Rahul Chetry, general secretary of Dibrugarh University Students’ Union.
“During the lockdown, it has become really difficult for these students to pay the rent. We want the state government to step up and help these students in need,” he added.
Office bearers from Assam Women’s University, Tezpur University, Cotton University, Gauhati University and Dibrugarh University have signed the letter.
