Students can write the PG degree exam in medicine even if they haven’t presented research papers.
NEW DELHI: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has relaxed the postgraduate thesis submission norms due to COVID-19 disrupting the training of postgraduate medical students. The commission has stated that students can submit the thesis three months before the theory and clinical, which was six months earlier.
The relaxation has been given to postgraduate degree students of batches 2018-19 and 2019-20 only.
A circular issued by the NMC says: “It has received several requests regarding submission of Postgraduate thesis of students for the batches admitted during academic years 2018-19 and 2019-20. The Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) has decided to relax the said portion of the regulation and allow the Postgraduate degree students of batches 2018-19 and 2019-20 only, to submit their thesis at least three months before the theory and clinical or practical examination.”
The NMC has also provided relief to PG students by relaxing the norms for paper presentation that students have to meet to be eligible to appear for the postgraduate degree examination. It has allowed students to appear for examinations even if they have not made a poster presentation, read a paper at a conference or submitted a paper for publication.
The commission has also instructed medical colleges and universities in view of the dearth of clinical material during current COVID-19 Pandemic, that while evaluating the thesis submitted for acceptance, “final sample size actually analyzed may be considered even if it is less than the committed sample size” in the approved thesis protocol for the study.
