The Wrap: JEE Main 2024 with changes; more time to apply for CLAT 2024; IIT-BHU protests

Latest Education News: Registration began for the Joint Entrance Examination Main (JEE Main 2024) and the exam notification brought changes. Like the undergraduate medical entrance test, NEET UG, the JEE Main 2024 syllabus is slimmer and registration will cost less for certain sections of students.

The JEE Main 2024 registration is open at jeemain.nta.ac.in till November 20 for Session 1. Registration for JEE Main 2024 Session 2 will begin on February 2. JEE Main 2024 syllabus has been reduced with topics docked from all three subjects, most from the chemistry section. The National Testing Agency, which conducts the exam, has also reduced the NTA JEE Main exam fee for several categories of students including those in the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and the Other Backward Classes (OBC). The JEE Main 2024 exam city count has also dropped to just 300.

In other news, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and its exam and testing body, PARAKH – full form, Performance Assessment, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development – conducted the State Education Achievement Survey (SEAS 2023) across states and union territories. The PARAKH exam was conducted for Classes 3, 6 and 9.

Then, Indian Institute of Technology - Banaras Hindu University (IIT-BHU) saw student protests after a second-year BTech student was molested and filmed on campus, very early on Thursday morning. The protests continued until the IIT-BHU administration agreed to build a wall to separate it from the rest of the university.

International NGO, UNESCO inducted two Indian cities into its list of Creative Cities Network. Kerala’s Kozhikode before India’s first ‘City of Literature’ and Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior, the country’s second ‘City of Music’.

Policy: AI courses; NCERT’s Chandrayaan 3 modules ‘pseudoscientific’; fellowship at 7 IIMs is PhD; medical college rating

• A government panel has framed an AI policy that involves teaching children from Class 6 the use of Artificial Intelligence. The panel proposed teaching AI courses from Class 6 to undergraduate programmes and that every course should include an ethics component.
• The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved over 1,200 online courses and opened registration for Buddhist Studies.
• National Council of Educational Research and Training’s (NCERT) Chandrayaan 3 modules are “pseudoscientific”. A group of scientists have asked the NCERT to recall the modules are “full of errors” and contain “misleading scientific content”.
• The fellowship programmes at seven Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) are equivalent to PhD, the education ministry reminded the public in a notice.
• All medical colleges will be rated from 2024-25 session, said the National Medical Commission. Here’s more on how NMC and QCI will assess medical colleges.
• Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan signed an agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on research and student-exchange programmes. Pradhan also announced plans of setting up a Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) regional office in the UAE.
• The education ministry and Election Commission of India signed an agreement to spread voter awareness in schools.
• Assam has reserved 3 MBBS seats across two medical colleges in the state for Bhutanese nationals.
• All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has launched a placement portal for rural and tribal students. It will serve 6 lakh villages.
• The Odisha Government promised free wifi on university campuses

College Admissions: JEE for IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi; CLAT 2024 sample papers; XAT 2024 mock test today

• In an interview with Careers360 IIT Delhi director Rangan Banerjee said admission to IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi campus may be through the JEE Main and JEE Advanced for Indians. The proposal is with the JEE board which is yet to approve it. IIT Delhi is also in the process of revising its curriculum for every branch, making the BTech and other programmes more “flexible”, the director said.
• IIT Madras will allow modification of the JAM 2024 application form from November 20.
• Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) has invited applications for MBA IB and MBA BA for 2024. Applications are open till December 6.
• The deadline to apply for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT 2024) was pushed to November 10. The fourth set of CLAT 2024 sample papers was released. The law entrance test for the National Law Universities is on December 3.
• The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) postponed the NEET BDS BSc stray vacancy round of counselling until further notice. The results of the seat allotment for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for dentistry and BSc courses were to be announced on October 28 but were not.
• Registration for design entrance tests, CEED and UCEED 2024, extended till November 6.
• Vellore Institute of Technology started registration for its engineering entrance test, VITEEE 2024. Exam is tentatively in April.
• Second XAT 2024 mock test today.

School Education News: Maharashtra SSC dates change; JNV lateral entry; Delhi closed schools due to pollution

• Maharashtra Board revised its Class 10 (SSC) time-table; dates for major exams including maths, science and social sciences have been revised.
• Deadline to register for lateral entry into Classes 9 and 11 of the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) extended.
• National Institute of Open Schooling’s (NIOS) Classes 10 and 12 exams on November 7 have been postponed for Mizoram and Chhattisgarh.
• Kashmir school timings changed due to unpredictable weather.
• Delhi closed primary schools for two days due to rising air pollution.
• Kerala extended the deadline to register for the National Merit cum Means Scholarships (NMMS scholarship) for 2023-24.

Study Abroad: New GRE pattern; 2 new Alliance Francaise branches; scholarship

• ETS introduced a new exam pattern for the GRE 2023, reducing the exam duration by half.
• French minister announced new Alliance Francaise branches in Udaipur and Bhubaneswar as part of measures to attract more Indian students to study in France.
• University of Lincoln vice-chancellor told Careers360 that there’s been a ‘big increase’ in the number of Indian students at the institution. He also spoke about what Indians study abroad and more.
• University of Queensland VC explained why the change in Australia visa regulations was necessary.
• Imperial College, London, launched a scholarship for Indians.
