Scholars have been selected from IISc, IIT Madras and Delhi, JNU, DU, Mumbai University and elsewhere. They will pursue master's in AI, cybersecurity, renewable energy and others.
Seventy-five Indian students have been awarded the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship for 2026-28. Awarded by the European Union, the Joint Master’s Degree (EMJMD) scholarships will support students through two-year master’s programmes at leading universities across 15 European countries, including France, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Germany, Italy, Poland, Austria, Hungary, the Netherlands, Greece, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Romania and Lithuania.
The EU has also launched the EU-India Student Ambassadors’ Network to raise awareness of higher education and research opportunities in Europe among students in India.
The network will comprise 40 student ambassadors from 20 Indian universities across 14 states and union territories. The ambassadors will engage with students, promote European academic opportunities and strengthen awareness of the EU-India partnership among young people.
Erasmus Mundus Scholarships
The Erasmus programme has awarded more than 7,500 scholarships to Indian nationals since 2004. Of these, over 2,500 were Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's Degree scholarships, known for their highly competitive selection process.
India continues to be among the top recipients of these Erasmus Mundus scholarships since 2004. According to the EU statement, about one lakh Indian students are currently pursuing higher education in Europe.
“The cohort includes students from top-ranked technical and research institutions, such as the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, and Indian Institute of Science, as well as prominent multidisciplinary universities, including Jawaharlal Nehru University, the University of Delhi, and the University of Mumbai. The network also draws from emerging innovation hubs, such as the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad and Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, and regional academic leaders, like Panjab University, the University of Rajasthan, Gauhati University, and the University of Calicut, ensuring a pan-Indian reach,” says the statement.
The recipients of the Erasmus scholarship will study interdisciplinary programmes in areas aligned with the EU's and India's strategic priorities, including cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, smart urban development, renewable energy, nanosystems, vaccinology, pharmaceutical sciences and gender studies. Several students have also opted for programmes in literature, cultural studies and social sciences.
