Gujarat govt removes 10,000 engineering seats, adds 510: Report

NEW DELHI: After announcing it will reduce the number of engineering seats by over 9,500, the Gujarat state has partially revised that Government Resolution (GR) to add 510 engineering diploma and degree seats across 29 polytechnics and 11 government engineering colleges across the state.

The fresh GR came on February 29, 2020, reported in The Indian Express . It had earlier reported that the government had decided to close down nearly 10,000 diploma and engineering colleges on February 7.

The GR issued on Saturday also says that the number of sanctioned seats in the remaining colleges to remain the same as was stated in the issued in February and will follow the AICTE admission guidelines.

The state government had earlier justified its move saying that the February 7 decision was taken after an analysis by the education department of seats that went vacant in engineering colleges and polytechnic over the last three-four years, the report said. “In 2019-20, there was a huge number of vacant seats in engineering colleges and polytechnic institutes. As a result of which the enrolment in several government colleges declined drastically,” the GR states.

Further, the news report quotes the GR as saying: “According to AICTE, it is mandatory for every institute to have NBA’s (National Board of Accreditation) accreditation for 50 percent of its courses before academic session 2022-23. On the basis of which, sanctioned intake student-faculty ratio (SFR) is calculated. So, it was necessary to reduce the current intake and take a decision on the revised intake.”
