NEW DELHI, JANUARY 19, 2019: NTA has announced the JEE Main 2019 percentile scores as part of the result on January 19. The result was supposed to be declared on January 30 but has been released more than 10 days earlier. However, the percentile scores are not the actual marks scored by the students. These are the scores obtained after using the normalization methods declared by NTA on its official website. This is to ensure that equivalence is maintained for all JEE Main 2019 January sessions.
So the big question asked by all students is - How to calculate JEE Main Percentile? To know that check the detailed JEE Main normalization process used by NTA below.
What is JEE Main 2019 percentile score?
When exams are held in multiple sessions across days, the relative performance is measured to ensure equivalence for all sessions. Therefore, Percentile scores are based on the relative performance of all candidates who appear for the examination. The marks of these students are converted into a scale ranging from 100 to 0 for each session of examinees. This percentile score indicates the percentage of candidates whose marks in JEE Main are either equal to or below that percentile.
So a topper will be one who gets 100 percentile on account of scoring the highest in that session. The marks obtained between the highest and lowest marks are then converted to the appropriate percentiles.

What is the Formula to calculate JEE Main Percentile Scores?
Before this formula is used, the highest and lowest raw scores are first compiled. The highest normalised scores of each session will be the 100 percentile score for that session. The percentile score of the candidates with the lowest marks will be dependent on the total candidates who appeared for the exam on that day.
What is the method to resolve tie in case two candidates get the same JEE Main 2019 percentile?
The higher ranks will be first awarded to
- The candidate obtaining higher Percentile Score in Mathematics
- Next the candidate obtaining higher Percentile Score in Physics
- Then the candidates obtaining higher Percentile Score in Chemistry
- Lastly the candidates older in age will be given the higher rank.
JEE Main 2019 Percentile Score Calculation and preparation of Merit List
Preparation of Results for each Session: The Raw Scores will be converted to Percentile scores separately for each subject. Therefore, four percentiles (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry) and the total will be calculated for each session and announced for each candidate
The better of the two JEE Main 2019 percentile scores will be considered for the purpose of ranking and the inter-se-merit rules applied. Admissions will be on the basis of the JEE Main ranks announced thereby.
