NEW DELHI: A set of new guidelines on digital education released on July 14 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development recommends limiting screen time to 30 minutes every alternate day for pre-primary children. It recommends a maximum of four sessions of 30-45 minutes each per day for the oldest students in Classes 9 to 12. It also informs parents and children about healthy online habits, postures and safety in cyberspace.

The 20-page guidebook titled Pragyata(Plan, Review, Arrange, Guide, Yak(talk), Assign, Track, Appreciate) on digital education for schools, states, parents and students is based on a discussion held on June 8 and the guidelines have been framed by the ministry’s Department of School Education and Literacy.

Human resource development minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ said on social media that the Pragyata document consists of “Guidelines on #DigitalEducation for school heads, teachers, parents, and students containing recommended screen time for children, tips on coping with mental/physical stress during #DigitalLearning and more.”

“Curate, develop and use digital resources and tools including open and free resources,” the document advises the states. It also recommends adopting the alternative academic calendar developed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training, or NCERT. It also tells states to run “educational content through state-specific tv, radio and other means of communication”.
