NEW DELHI: "Suppression of depression is not good. Expression is always good. If depressed, share your feelings with others, it will make you feel better,” Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, human resource development minister quoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s words on his official Twitter handle.
The ministry of human resource and development (MHRD) is preparing guidelines to take care of the mental well-being of students and their families.
The purpose of the initiative named “Manodarpan” is to help the students to cope with stress during lockdown.
Concerned about students’ mental health being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the MHRD will launch a set of guidelines prepared by experts in child psychology.
MHRD has been trying to alleviate mental health issues that may arise among students during the lockdown because of their anxieties over studies and examinations.
Indian Express reported that in the first week of April, MHRD had said that a separate cell would be set up to address the mental health issues faced by students and teachers during and post COVID-19 pandemic. The cell will be headed by a Joint Secretary at the MHRD.
The HRD minister had instructed educational institutions including the Indian institute of Technology (IITs) and central universities to establish a helpline to address mental health challenges.
The minister had suggested that a task force including psychologists should be set up in every institute to handle mental health issues.
The HRD ministry had also set up a helpline to help the students. The University Grants Commission (UGC) had issued a set of guidelines to universities to set up helplines and regularly mentor students to ensure their mental well-being.
