IIT Kanpur alumni from the Class of 1986 commit Rs 11 crore to student wellbeing, infrastructure and campus life during 40-year reunion
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur alumni from the class of 1986 have pledged Rs 11 crore for a range of campus initiatives at their 40-year reunion. Their contribution will go towards a new auditorium, a tower of student residences and a mental health centre.
The reunion, held from December 18 to 21, 2025, brought together alumni from across the globe to reconnect with their alma mater and contribute to its long-term growth.
The pledged amount will support three batch legacy projects aimed at enhancing student life, wellbeing and community engagement on campus.
These include the construction of a SAC Extension Auditorium, the establishment of a Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing, and the development of a tower in the new Hall of Residence.
Together, the initiatives seek to strengthen institutional infrastructure while fostering a more inclusive and supportive campus environment for students.
IIT Kanpur alumni highlight impact on campus
Speaking on the occasion, IIT Kanpur director Manindra Agrawal, himself an alumnus of the class of 1986, said “The institute has played a defining role in shaping who we are today. I am immensely proud of my batchmates for coming together to support initiatives that will directly impact students’ academic, cultural, and emotional well-being. This collective commitment exemplifies the spirit of responsibility and gratitude that IIT Kanpur alumni carry throughout their lives.”
Prof. Amey Karkare, dean of resources and alumni at IIT Kanpur, described the pledge as a landmark example of alumni leadership and collective philanthropy. He said the contribution would significantly boost student-centric facilities and reinforce the enduring bond between the institute and its alumni community.
The 40-Year Reunion was marked by reflection, camaraderie and renewed engagement with the institute’s mission. IIT Kanpur acknowledged the class of 1986 for their exceptional support and expressed optimism for continued alumni partnership in advancing education, innovation and student wellbeing.
Sharing the batch’s perspective, alumni batch coordinator Ajit Dass added, “As we came together for our 40-Year Reunion, there was a shared desire to give back in a way that would create lasting value for the institute and its students. These legacy projects represent our collective gratitude and our hope to contribute meaningfully to the lives of current and future IITK students.”
